We left Corvallis at 8:00am--a late day for us! It was a leisurely drive to Portland, where the Rose Festival is going on. Our only stop of the day was at OMSI, the Oregon Museum of Science and Industry. We were set up on the plaza with static display vehicles and hands-on activities from CaFCP's teacher kits. About 250 people came by to drive the vehicles.
I talked to two really amazing kids. The first was a 13-year-old boy who was fascinated by the laws of matter. He was so knowledgeable about gasses under pressure! I sent him off to the Powertech refueler to talk to Phil and Angela. The other boy, about 10, stopped by just as we were leaving. He and I chatted about the effect of wind shear on high-speed vehicles, like airplanes, bullet trains and the Ford Focus FCV that set the land speed record two years ago. My coworkers said they talked to other future engineers and scientists, which is exactly why we do events at science museums.
We're back on the road and, as I write this from the car, have crossed into Washington. We're taking it easy today and heading straight for the hotel and some well deserved rest before the push through Washington and into BC.
